‘Art by the metre……….’

‘ Having just returned from yet another international art fair, it appeared to me that many contemporary artists on show did not understand the basic aesthetic principles of the importance of scale. Many of the paintings exhibited were far too large given the language and mark-making that was used. They would have been far more successful paintings if the artists had chosen to work on a much more smaller size of canvas. For example, a Rothko envelopes you, while a Klee draws you into a personal dialogue through it’s delicacy and intimacy.

Art should not be painted or purchased by the metre, but by the strength of it’s visionary, exploratory journey into the human condition.’
